Piggery Café

From the chef, restauranteur, director and mastermind behind Vue de Monde, Piggery Café is Shannon Bennet’s latest addition to his repertoire. Piggery Café brings a touch of magic to the lands of Sherbrooke with its sense of calm and free-flowing vibes, a space that oozes warmth in a rustic manner with a touch of modernity.

With their philosophy of embracing every facet of the garden-to-plate doctrine, Piggery Café has a lot to boast about. Think premium pork from Greenvale Farm, fish caught by Mark Eather and beefing things up with Blackmore Wagyu. Let's not forget the lamb and wallaby sourced directly from Flinders Island in Tasmania. Coffee wise, you can never go wrong with Five Senses coupled with milk from Schulz Organic Farms.

Here at Pggery Café, it's all about the “live to eat, not eat to live” mantra.

Blackmore Wagyu Beef Burger

By far, the most popular dish was the Blackmore Wagyu Beef Burger. I mean, we ordered five of these babies and we were not disappointed. The patty was rich, hearty and seasoned perfectly. Each bite was burger heaven with burger juices dripping from out hands to our elbows. Really, need I say more ? Please refer to the photo above.

Mark Eather Barramundi Burger

On the other end of the table, my friend ordered the Mark Eather Barramundi Burger which didn't seem to go down as well as the beefy wagyu beef burgers we were chowing down. I also think it's worth mentioning that the boys felt the burgers were much too tiny for their ever-growing appetites.

Lobster Roll

Unfortunately, the Lobster Roll too wasn't the most well received and honestly looked rather naked. Though the flavours and quality were there, the quantity not so much. Of course, it's always quality over quantity but who couldn't do with a bit more lobster ?

House-made Fries

The rustic chips on the other hand were great, filled with pillowy soft potato and crunchy ends laced with salt.

Having Shannon Bennet's name connected with Piggery Café, I'd have to say that I went in with pretty high expectations. Perhaps that was unfair of me. With service noticeably lacking, and friends leaving hungry and unsatiated, those expectations were not completely satisfied. That Blackmore Wagyu Beef Burger though…

Grand Trailer Park Taverna

Melbourne’s burger scene just keeps on giving. Seriously Melbourne, you are really too kind.

Of late, it seems that Melburnians have been hopelessly infatuated with Grand Trailer Park Taverna - brain child of Dani Zeini (the man behind the acclaimed Pavilion) and Joshua Lefers (design mastermind behind Pawn & Co. and Big Dog Creative). Located on the site of what was once Happy Palace, the space has now transformed into an east coast trailer park inspired wonderland. So of course I had to see what the fuss was all about.

Atomic

First of all, I'd have to say Grand Trailer Park's burgers would have to be one of the sexiest burgers out there at the moment, inside and out. Because you know, it's not just all looks, the inside counts too.

My my my, boy was my burger loaded. The 100% Aussie beef pattie matched insanely well with each element of the Atomic: the molten chilli cheese of the kransky, the intensity of saltiness of the crispy bacon, the creaminess of the American cheddar cheese, the smokiness of the BBQ sauce to the gourmet touch of truffle and cayenne. The lightly toasted brioche bun didn't hold back either, it was all butter. The Atomic ? Explosive.

The Chunk - Double Double

On the end of the table, BK tucked into The Chunk - Double Double, a monstrous burger made of 2 premium Aussie beef patties, double oozy American cheddar cheese, smoky caramelised onion, hot jalapenos, thinly sliced gherkins, American mustard and tomato sauce on a light toasted brioche bun. Oh, and of course he took it to the next level with an added potato mac and cheese croquette and crispy bacon. All smashed in a matter of seconds. His chips on the other hand were just meh.

Kinder Surprise / Surprise Milkshake

And to wash everything down ? Spiked milkshakes of course. I'm usually one to eat my calories rather than drink them, but these babies, I could not pass up. Each and every one sounded amazing.

BK went straight for the Kinder Surprise, a frothy concoction of pure chocolate spiked with Frangelico and Baileys. And so I thought, heck, I want a surprise too.  The result ? A thick, velvety creamy fusion of chocolatey goodness and peanut butter. Nothing to dislike about that !

If you’ve been hunting for a spot to sink your teeth into some serious burgers, Grand Trailer Park is the place to be. Heart stopping burgers (heh) and wickedly devine milkshakes. What more can one ask for ?

Hello Sam

Puns. I love puns. Even better ? Buns with puns. Enter Hello Sam.

You may remember my last post on Hello Sam earlier this year, and so I was delighted when the owner, Katherine made contact to let me know that they just introduced a new menu ! After spotting numerous mouth-watering posts on their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, I was sold.

Sam the Man

Wow, just wow. Where do I even begin ? The thick 100% Angus beef patty was cooked just right, to a wonderful shade of pink in the middle, topped off with the perfect melted hit of cheddar ale oozing into every nook and cranny. Add to that bacon, egg, lettuce, tomato, red onion, beetroot relish, tomato relish and not just one mustard, but two mustard mayo. I did feel however, a pinch of salt or a punch of herbs would have really taken the patty in the burger to the next level. On the other hand, the sweetness of the relishes added an extra oomph of flavour, but not to the extent of overshadowing the burger. Post Sam the Man, I looked like an absolute mess. Real lady-like, I know. Oh, a great job on the onion rings too.

Davo - Sam's Big Brother

Whilst I was making my way through Sam the Man, Burger King wrapped his hands (hardly) around Davo – Sam’s big brother, beefing it up to three patties. The whole thing was glorious really – barely contained between a toasted brioche bun was beef, bacon, egg, beef, hash brown, red onion, tomato relish, BBQ sauce and even more beef. And he demolished it. Asked for his thoughts on the burger, he mentioned that he would have loved to see some fresh elements in there and would have preferred less BBQ sauce.

BBQ n’ Bacon Chips

Between mouthfuls of our burgers, we also spoiled ourselves with BBQ n’ Bacon Chips. Think crispy, thicky and fluffy beer-battered chips loaded with bacon, slathered in BBQ sauce and tasty cheese.

The lovely Katherine appreciatively took on board all our feedback, and will be working closely with their head chef to continously improve their new menu. Talk about customer service !

Charlie & Co. Burgers

Proudly dreamt and created in Sydney, Charlie & Co. is all about "bringing the good times." Their philosophy ? To bring you the ultimate burger experiences with quality produce, inspiring environment and great service. Let's put them to the test, shall we ?

Mighty Charlie Burger

Not holding back, we went for the Mighty Charlie Burger - an impressive tower of a well seasoned chargrilled Wagyu patty, smokey bacon, fried egg, melty cheddar, sun ripened tomato, sour pickled gherkins, caramelised onions, garden leaves, creamy aioli and Charlie's signature tomato sauce all sandwiched between a toasted artisan bun. Though I was rather downhearted that the egg was overcooked, this burger was still a messy affair and oh so satisfying.

Parmesan & Truffle Fries

Inevitably, we also indulged in crunchy golden fries with a gourmet touch of parmesan and truffle. It was a shame that these didn't come out piping hot though.

Simply put, Charlie & Co. does a mean burger and only adds to my love for the Emporium. My suggestion is to roll up your sleeves and have plenty of serviettes handy. Expect big flavours and a full belly.

Fat Bob's Bar & Grill

Fat Bob's Bar & Grill really needs no introduction. You’ve heard it from The Burger Adventure, and you’ve seen it topping the charts on The Herald Sun, but what were my thoughts?

Gourmet Zucchini Chips

We started with the Gourmet Zucchini Chips, deep fried to a light and crispy finish, which contrasted nicely with the tender flesh of the zucchini.

Jackie O

Juicy The 180g grass fed beef patty was cooked simply, just between medium and well done – juicy and meaty in the centre, though dry on the outer edges. The bun was soft yet solid, tomato and cos fresh, with slices of sweet Spanish onion, all smeared with squirts of tangy mustard, tomato sauce and Fat Bob’s special creamy tangy sauce. In size, it was a rather large burger, but taste-wise, nothing outstanding.

Fat Bob

My friend challenged himself to the Fat Bob – a true Aussie burger beefed up with a beef patty, beetroot, tomato, Spanish onion, tasty cheese, bacon rashers, a pineapple ring, fried egg, cos and tomato sauce. All of which he washed down with a creamy chocolate milkshake.

Perhaps it was the hype, the reviews and the high expectations that I had gone in with. For me, Fat Bob’s just didn’t blow me away. Burgers aside, the neon signage, old tin cans and atmosphere were one of a kind, and overall I did enjoy myself. If you’re in the area - I’d happily point you in the right direction.

Hello Sam

There are times when all you're after is a burger to sink your teeth into - for that serious meat fix. Then, there are the times when you find yourself looking for a healthier burger - something substantial, yet at the same time, not too heavy. The great thing about Hello Sam, is that they've catered for both these needs.

Spicy Sam and Beer-battered Chips

This time round, I found myself in the mood for a fresher and lighter option, but of course not wanting to sacrifice on taste. Spicy Sam it was. Jammed between a toasted brioche bun were a beef patty, crisp lettuce, tomato, red onion and fiery jalapeños all doused in a spicy chipotle mayo. True to its name, the burger didn't hold back on the spice meter at all. I love a spicy kick, though I found that it did become a little too overpowering, which ended up masking its accompaniments.

The chips you ask ? They were absolutely amazing - beer-battered and deep fried to perfection. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, just the way I like it. Chips really don't get much better than these.

Hello Sam is certainly a welcomed addition to the quieter end of Chapel Street. Evidently a reliable burger joint for many, Hello Sam has been a hit and have really been bringing all the boys to the yard. I would say the burger was okay, and it was the chips that stole the limelight. Nonetheless, I left feeling full and satisfied.

Mr Burger

The guys at Mr Burger are pretty serious about what they do. They serve burgers, chips and drinks - that is all. Three carefully crafted burgers with top notch ingredients, made just for Melbournians. Mr Burger, Mr Meat and Mr Veg, take your pick.

Being the little piggy I am, I think I nearly squealed when my work colleague had pointed out the food truck across the road.

Mr Meat

Wrapped in foil, just like the American take away burgers do, my Mr Meat did not disappoint. A reliable combination of a sweet and super soft bun, a juicy patty of tender beef, and oozy, melty cheese. Topped off with fresh lettuce, smokey bacon, caramelised onions, tangy pickles and a lathering of BBQ sauce and mayo, I wolfed this down in record time. A truly satisfying burger that really hit the bullseye.

Mr Burger, I blame you - you've got me addicted to burgers all over again.

The Royale Brothers

Founded by the boys from The Pantry, The Royale Brothers sneakily opened their doors on the 19th of December, but any hopes of a soft opening were soon dashed. Only within days, The Royale Brothers were quickly garnering attention from all. Think elite international sports stars - Harry Kewell and Ana Ivanovic. Of course I had to go in to see what all the fuss was about.

Royale with Cheese

From the fluffy milk bun, juicy patty to the cheese that oozed into every crevice - each ingredient worked extremely well together. But they were also stand out elements on their own: the sharpness of the onion, the freshness of the lettuce, the crunch of the pickles, the spice of the mustard, and the creaminess of the mayo and Royale sauce.

Crispy Fish

I also had my eye on the Crispy Fish burger - crispy lightly-battered fish, creamy avocado, melty cheese and house slaw slathered with coney island cocktail sauce. We did find that this burger was a tad too creamy  for our liking though - with the combination of  avocado, cheese, mayo and coney island cocktail sauce.

Baby Chicken

But it was the Baby Chicken that stole the show - with chicken so tender and juicy. It was a messy affair with the sexy cheese dribble and thick rich tomato sauce, but one that was welcomed bite after bite. It was really hard to fault this burger at all.

Royale Spiced Chips

Between stuffing our faces, we also nibbled on Simply Salted Chips and Royale Spiced Seasoned Chips which were crispy on the outside and pillowy on the inside - insanely addicting.

The burgers are better at The Royale Brothers - cheesy grins guaranteed.
