Tuck Shop Takeaway

Tuck Shop Takeaway has been on my radar for a while now. And with the little bro, D-man finished up at tutoring, that's exactly where I decided to take him.

Back when I was in high school, I adored the canteen. No doubt you would find me there everyday. Please don't ask me how I managed to scoff down three potato cakes with chicken salt on a daily basis. Located in Caulfiled North, Tuck Shop has taken the canteen experience to the next level. Here you will find twists on old favourites from a range of fancy filling jaffles, classic burgers to sugar-coma inducing milkshakes.

Pulled Pork Jaffle

This was no boring ham and cheese jaffle. Tuck Shop had the genius idea of combining juicy pulled pork, sweet apple and fennel chutney and smokey almond mayo together to create two golden halves of sinful goodness. The bread was buttered up and toasted till it was nice and crisp. A bite in and my nostrils were filled with the rich aromas of butter and tastebuds were singing happy days.

 Major Burger

D-man was starving and ordered the biggest burger on the menu - the Major Burger. Though jam packed with  a 100% beef patty, egg, bacon,  lettuce, tomato, Kraft single cheese, onion, pickles, Tuck Shop sauce into a towering burger - he found the burger as a whole did not pack enough punch. It was good, but nothing amazing.

Hand Cut Chips

A generous basket of hand cut chips were ordered as a side to share. Now, D-man doesn't like chips, he loves them. Unfortunately, he only thought these were okay. A little oilier and soggier than what he would prefer.

Though little in size, Tuck Shop was extremely busy, with locals popping in and out for both quick bites and slurps or for on-the-gos. Under the pump, staff were fast, friendly and efficient. Completed with the Prinicpal's office in the naughty corner, pencil tumbler cups, and hand written menus, Tuck Shop was nostalgia everywhere I looked. For those jaffles alone, I would hop, skip and jump to Tuck Shop Takeaway any day of the week.

Big Boy BBQ

Rain rain go away, come again some other day. Well that didn't work. What to do now ? Go to Big Boy BBQ for greasy, fatty, meat meat and more meat on this freezing winter night of course.

There is none of that dainty serviette/napkin nonsense here,  they offer manly paper towels here instead and buckets for bones - it's all about being a Big Boy. And if you weren't one already, no doubt you become by the time you finished up here.
Given so many choices of sauces, of course I had to sample them all ! You've got your regular tabasco, ketchup and four types of BBQ sauce - vinegar BBQ sauce, spicy BBQ sauce, Braai-BQ style sauce  and Kansas style BBQ sauce.

Big Boy Platter

It was without question which platter we were to order - The Big Boy Platter. It is actually captioned in the menu that this platter feeds 1-6 people. What kind of a range is that ?! Oh, Americans. Borderline, EpicMealTime style came out saucy beef brisket, pulled pork scotch fillet, pulled lamb shoulder, beef pastrami, ½ rack of Kansas Style dry rubbed pork ribs, ½ rack of saucy glazed lamb ribs, regular wings and pickles. Let's don't forget the pickles, we all know how important vegetables are. For our jumbo sides, we went for amazngly crunchy lightly spiced chips, onion strings and potato salad. Coupled with bottomless soft drinks, there was American feels all night.

No matter how hard the 5 of us tried tackling this ginormous dome of meat, we still had left overs. In the end, I guess we really went for the novelty - the American BBQ dining experience. For me, all the meats tasted pretty much the same, all doused in BBQ sauce. I found myself picking at the sides more than the mains, which really says something. Nonetheless, Big Boy BBQ was fun but not somewhere I will be returning any time soon.

Mr. Brightside

Hello Mr Brightside !

With the natural sunlight shining through the glass windows, Mr Brightside's design wowed me. I absolutely loved their shop interior. It all looked so simple, but at the same time, not. It had an oh-so-good fresh morning feel and that nice neighbourhoodly feel.

So so pretty !

Corn croquettes, smoked salmon, snow pea tendrils with lemon dressing and poached egg

Corn croquettes were perfect. Crunchy on the outside, smooth and creamy on the inside, with the occasional sweet bursts of corn. Would have loved more than just two ! Eggs were also cooked just right, giving way to that perfect liquid gold.

Mexican chilli beans, smashed avocado, chorizo and poached egg

And BAM ! Was quite surprised these beans were actually spicy !

Food was fresh, presented well and very tasty. Staff were also very attentive, often walking over to check if everything was okay. It was a pleasure meeting you Mr Brightside, and I know I'll certainly be seeing you very soon.
